What are registration holds and how can they be removed?

Answer ID 6617   |    Published 05/07/2012 05:17 PM   |    Updated 02/01/2024 03:53 PM

When registering for a course I'm told "You may not add or drop classes due to holds on your record"

My View Holds page lists holds on my record

How can I get these removed so I can register?

Holds are added to your record for a variety of reasons:

Generally, they indicate that a University office needs you to resolve something (pay a bill, return a book), do something (orientation), or see someone (advisement) before the hold can be removed.  To have a hold removed, contact the Originator for the hold after completing the indicated action.

Use the View Holds option in LoboWeb to get details about any holds you may have:
  • Login to my.unm.edu using your NetID and Password
    • Don’t have a NetID yet? Get one Here.
  • Click on the “Student Lifetab across the top of the myUNM web page.
  • Click on the red “LoboWeb” link in the middle of the page. [Please note any announcements that may be presented above the LoboWeb link.]
  • From the Student & Financial Aid Menu click on “Registration & Records
  • Click on the "Registration & Records".
  • click on the link to the "Registration Portal"
  • click on "Check My Registration Status"
  • click on the "Term" for which you are checking your status
  • click "Continue"
  • The ORIGINATOR of the hold identifies the office that you will contact for details and to have the hold removed.

This page contains several pieces of information about any holds on your record:
  • Hold Type: See the table below for a complete list and how to resolve.  The most common types are:
    • Admissions, Incomplete: your admission packet is missing a final official document (high school or recent college transcript most likely), check your admission status in LoboWeb.
    • Advisement: there are several possible issues, contact your college advisement center for assistance.
    • Bursar, Past Due Amount: your bill is overdue, contact the Bursar for assistance.
    • Orientation: you need to complete required orientation, contact the Dean of Students Office for assistance.
  • From Date: This is the date the hold becomes effective.  Many advisement holds are added to your record early in the term but do not become effective (prevent registration changes) until later in the term.
  • To Date: This is the date the hold expires.  An expired hold will not normally appear on this page.
  • Amount: Not used
  • Reason: A very brief description of the hold reason.  The Originator will use this information to get you to the right resolution.
  • Originator: The office that requested the hold be placed.  Most commonly, this will be the Bursar (payment issues) or your college advisement center (registration, graduation, etc.).or
  • Processes Affected: Holds may impact any combination of the following:
    • Registration: prevents adding and dropping courses.
    • Transcript: prevents issuance of official transcripts.  You may still request an unofficial transcript in person at the One-Stop or your Branch Registrar's Office.
    • A/R: prevents payments to UNM.
    • Application: prevents application to UNM.
